Give Back the Light: A Doctor's Relentless Struggle to End Blindness, by James C. Moore Steve Charles MD

Review

''Retina surgeons are the crème de la crème in the realm of ophthalmology. Steve Charles stands right at the top of that pyramid. Moore does a masterful job of combining his compelling personal struggle as a patient with clear explanations of eye structures, ophthalmic procedures, and the innovative techniques and instruments that Dr. Charles has developed to preserve our precious vision. As someone who has covered the momentous achievements of the retina community for almost two decades, it is a joy to see the accomplishments of this wondrous eye surgeon finally celebrated.'' --Jerry Helzner, News Editor, Retinal Physician Magazine ''James Moore sneaks a comprehensive education into an intimate and inspiring true story of one man's greatest passion intersecting with another man's greatest fear. A poignant and compelling journey of discovery about the mysteries of human vision, technology, and the relentlessness of hope.'' --Kristen Tsetsi, author, The Age of the Child ''James Moore has written a truly original book about hope and discovery—the story of one man's search to save his sight and a remarkable doctor whose gift for invention and skills as a surgeon have helped restore vision to millions. The author writes about astonishing medical procedures with clarity and precision, deeply reported and rich in detail. And he uncovers the little-known history of medical giants in pursuit of the impossible. This is a profound book, both poignant and exhilarating, and readers will come away with the knowledge that Moore has taken them somewhere totally new.'' --Wayne Slater, Writer Emeritus, Dallas Morning News ''Give Back the Light is a tremendous achievement. James C. Moore weaves a wrenching personal account of his struggle to save the sight in his right eye with the history and accomplishments of legendary eye surgeon and innovator, Dr. Steve Charles. The book combines brilliant storytelling and a testament to one of the great minds in eye surgery with questions about where the divide lies between patient and physician responsibility. This book is a mesmerizing dive into the recent history of eye surgery and the journey of one patient.'' --Mary Pauline Lowry, author, Wildfire ''This remarkable book combines Jim Moore's battle to keep the vision in his right eye with a highly readable explanation of the history and intricacies of eye surgery (proliferative vitreo retinopathy, anyone?). It's a profile of a modern medical hero: Dr. Steve Charles, who also happens to be an engineer, an ace inventor, and a jet-airplane pilot. It's easy to be cynical about today's world. This is a book about an inspirational doctor who has saved the eyesight of thousands, or perhaps millions, of people. It will open your eyes to the beauty, the miracle of seeing.'' --Robert Bryce, author, Smaller Faster Lighter Denser Cheaper: How Innovation Keeps Proving the Catastrophists Wrong

This is a great read. I always wanted to know about the eye itself and this book gives all that and more. Through the writer's struggles with blindness we meet the world-class surgeon Dr. Charles, and together they reveal a journey that captivated me. This is not a technical manual. It is a page turner that ultimately tells me that great achievements are made through dedication and persistence, and that even in blindness, hope may be found.

Jim Moore’s Give Back the Light, tells the story of Dr. Steve Charles and his quest to discover new forms of eye disease and unique cutting edge treatments. Moore found out about Dr. Charles during his own search to cure a detached retina that refused to heal. Dr. Charles’ medical device creations lead to techniques that set the standard of care over the last 40 years. Jim artfully does a deep dive to translate Charles genius, weaving his own story of vision problems due to “sour luck and bad biology.” Yet, fortune brought Jim and Dr. Charles together leading to this splendid book. While Jim will truly miss playing old guy baseball, he remains unchanged. Best of all, he can still see.

Compelling story of two men who don’t know what the word quit means. One in his attempt to regain sight in his right eye and one who is driven to help others keep or regain sight. Anyone with eyes needs to read this.

I received this ARC e-book from NetGalley and the publisher, Greenleaf Book Group, in exchange for an honest review. To begin with I could only tolerate about 1/3 of this book. It is very poorly written with lots and lots of repetition. For example, there was a whole paragraph repeated word for word from chapter one to chapter two.The book was purportedly written for laymen interested in sight restoration, particularly in Steve Charles’ innovations in treatment of problems with the vitreous. The author started out explaining ocular problems in laymen’s terms, yet not in an elementary fashion. Soon, however, he segued into scientific and ophthalmologic jargon. He would go back and forth from a story line (which jumped all over the place) to lecturing (to medical students?). The lectures didn’t seem to maintain a relationship to the problems involved in the story line. However, the story line was not consistent, either.I’m sure the life and life-work of Steve Charles was a story worth chronicling, but this book did not do it justice.

I am recommending this book to my ophthalmologist and if he reads it,I will post an update or ask him to post a review as retina issues are part of his expertise.I found book interesting and informative. I would recommend to anyone interested in learning moreabout relatively new advancements made in retinal health field.ARC was provided courtesy of publisher thru NetGalley without any expectations of recompense whatsoever. One last thing that I personally would like to add: IF YOU OR ANYONE ELSE THAT YOU MAY KNOW HAVE HAD CHICKEN POX, PLEASE GET THE SHINGLES VACCINE (WITH YOUR DOCTOR'S BLESSING). I had shingles in the eye. I was basically blind in my eye for two weeks and twenty months later, I am still dealing with the aftermath. Thankfully I am seeing the light at the end of a long tunnel thanks to excellent and caring ophthalmologist care.

What a surprise! In a very good way. I'm an avid reader of thoroughly researched books that tell a great story. Like Jon Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven". Well, let me tell say that Jim Moore's book is as Krakauer-esque as I've read in a while. Kudo's to Jim and especially to Dr. Steve - a true champion.

Excellent story. Dr. Charles is a giant in his field, a phenomenal doctor, and an absolutely fascinating person.
