About the Author
Charles (Chuck) Wells bought his first 4-wheel-drive SUV in 1993, and he had no idea how it would change his life. Like most SUV owners in Colorado, he bought the vehicle primarily for winter driving. But one summer day, he saw an intriguing dirt road that headed into the mountains. Off he went on his first real trip beyond the pavement. It was so much fun, he searched for other roads to duplicate the experience. Many more trips followed. As his confidence grew, he ventured farther and farther into the backcountry. He realized he needed some guidance, so he bought every guidebook and map he could find. Unfortunately, most of the information was vague, incomplete or inaccurate. He continued to get lost, run into places too difficult for his vehicle and waste time on boring roads. This frustration led him to write his first book, Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails, in 1998. Sales took off, immediately. Within a year, he quit his job and started FunTreks Publishing. Many years later, Wells has published eleven books (two were replaced by new editions). His books include easy and moderate routes for stock SUVs, difficult trails for serious 4-wheelers and trails for unlicensed vehicles (ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes). Today his books are standard equipment for thousands of motorized adventurers. He strongly promotes responsible use of public lands.Charles continues to scout most of the trails and spends a great deal of time traveling in his motorhome. His books presently cover Colorado, Utah, Arizona and California. More states are planned. Wells graduated from Ohio State University in 1969 with a degree in graphic design. After practicing design in Ohio, he moved to Colorado Springs in 1980 and worked 18 years in the printing business. He and his wife, Beverly, have two adult children and 4 grandchildren. They now live in Monument, CO, close to their business. Matt (PT) Peterson got into 4-wheeling in 2000 after graduating from college. He built several off-road 4x4s starting with bolt parts, and later progressed to custom-built, off-road buggies. Wanting to share his new pastime, he and a few friends started their own 4-wheel-drive club in Michigan and the club is still going strong today. He has always had an interest in exploring less-traveled roads and was overjoyed when he moved to Colorado in 2003.He worked many years as a graphic designer and computer technician, then joined FunTreks in 2008. He currently scouts trails, then helps Wells write and produce the books. Peterson graduated from Bethel College in 2000 with a degree in graphic design. He met his wife, Cassie, soon after moving to Colorado. Together, they enjoy camping and other outdoor activities in Colorado's enormous backyard.

We used this guide to drive nearly a dozen trails in the Silverton - Ouray area, in SW Colorado, this summer. I used it mostly to pick trails that were rated either easy or moderate, as we were driving my stock '04 Jeep Rubicon. It's my every-day-driver, and doesn't have a lift and bigger wheels to navigate some of the obstacles on the more difficult trails, like our '73 Jeep CJ-5 has. I especially like the author's description at the beginning of each trail, as well as the pictures. We wish we'd had more time to explore other parts of Colorado. We've used Charles Wells' guide to Arizona, so knew what to expect with the Colorado guide. Although we are experienced off-roaders, this guide would be good for beginners as well.
I received my map book only to be disappointed when I found that it truly only covered a portion of ‘Colorado’. I had originally picked a different map book but changed my mind after reading the wonderful reviews on this one. The only issue I have is that it does not cover any area near my home. The North West area around the Poudre Canton, Red Feather Lakes and Cameron pass are completely left out of this collection. The quality and the information appeared to be very high quality. My only request would be either a different title, or a better description of exactly what areas would be covered in the book. I am already searching for a replacement.
We used this guidebook on a week long visit to the backroads of Colorado. The book contained only the best trails, with just the most important details we needed to make good decisions in planning & following routes. Every recommended trail we followed was fun and satisfying, and of course was spectacularly beautiful. I also thought the rating system of the book was very accurate- easy trails were accessible to most kinds of vehicles, and difficult trails had just the kind of challenging and fun obstacles we love to explore in our 4WD Toyota 4Runner. We also used the key and recommendations in the book to find good areas for camping. I would highly recommend this guide to anyone planning a trip who desires to explore the backroads of Colorado.
Amazing book for the adventurer! We took a jeep trail trip, and relied on this for all of our trails. We didn't update any trails with any of the GPS options, so we did run into one trail that had been labeled moderate (blue), but as the roads have washed out and worn down, it should be upgraded to difficult (red) and I wouldn't know if it was upgraded on the GPS coordinates options. Loved getting the little scenic overlooks and "look for___" and tidbits of history as well! Made the trip very enjoyable!
I don't know how he does it, but Charles Wells seems to have a keen insight into those individuals who take and use their vehicles off the beaten path. This book is more than just a simple sightseeing guide. It's a vivid, well defined, and colorful depiction of the places in Colorado it describes. Yet it's easy to follow and understand without having too much unnecessary information that would distract from the trails you drive on. The entire series of FunTrek guide books are a standard bearer in the 4wheeling community and a must have for anyone looking to explore the less traveled back roads and trails in each respective state they cover. But being that the author/printer/distributor is actually from Colorado, they take great pride in presenting this as their premier book, and hopefully the others when they get revised will receive the same treatment. Arizona being one example that is in dire need of updating, as the info in that book is now going on 10 years old.As to the actual book itself, therein lies the only complaint I can give. This book has a blind, covered spiral binding that prevents it from being folded over on itself. Therefore defeating the main purpose of having spiral binding in the 1st place. The paper and ink used seems to be of high quality and the addition of color in this version is a welcome addition and gives it more of a high quality presentation feel if nothing more. I still give it 5 stars, cause everything else, from the format, to the editing to the content and pictures are top notch. My one detraction is more like a 1/2 star deduction, but you can't rate in 1/2 stars, so thats why i gave it 5.I'm proud to be the 1st to review the newest Funtreks guidebook, as it was released less than 1month ago as of my review date. I highly recommend this and every other one of the company's trail guide series books for whatever state/location they have one listed for.
My husband recently got a Jeep Wrangler and wanted to explore more. He is very particular and finds this book super helpful and informative. We have already used it several times. Totally worth the money. I will say though that you have to be careful because even some of their trails that are rated easy may have different conditions depending on when you use them. We've had lots of fun but have gotten into a couple of "exciting" situations with the kids in the car. Have fun but be smart!
I have used this book to death. Unfortunately I am pretty rough on it, and I will probably need to replace it. It's been rained on, dropped in the mud, snow, puddles, you name it but it's still holding up considerably well. Great advice for each trail. Some trails even have historical notes which I found fascinating. The book also offers GPS coordinates for points on the trail in case you find yourself lost. If you live in Colorado or plan on visiting, this is an invaluable tool.
The book, directions, and trails are great. I especially like the 3D maps for sense of where you should be. However, the decision to extend the cover as a single piece over the spiral binder makes this edition much less usable. Instead of flipping the book open to the trail you're on, the cover is now constantly in the way and trying to close itself. Now I have to keep re-finding the page I want AND have a book that is twice the width. WHY COVER THE SPIRAL BINDER AND MAKE THE BOOK LESS USEFUL?!
