Review
The methodology is great and the experience from working with other companies stimulating. I see measurable results in the organization: more (and more open) communication across managers and employees, better alignment across silos, and deeper ownership of the strategy. All three are essential for success.Dr. Mario Crameri, CIO, Credit Suisse "I was quite skeptical at the start about this methodology. I have changed my mind. We have used Strategy-In-Action to create a shared understanding of what was missing or blocking us, we aligned on a joint vision and strategic intent, and we carried out 28 catalytic projects aimed at causing breakthroughs that we can now scale up or replicate (or, if one failed, take it off the agenda). I recommend this book to any senior manager who needs to mobilize a large-scale, complex organization for the future."Bruno Le Stradic, Director Space & Technology, Airbus Defense & SpaceStrategy-In-Action brings the really granular current thinking of how strategy needs to be constantly measured, monitored and pivoted upon. The insights will force you to think and then rethink what you thought you knew.Malcolm Elvey, Chairman, Academy of Chief ExecutivesStrategy-In-Action is highly systematic, but still manages to keep the human element at the core of strategy. It has helped us to unify our leadership team around one vision and one strategy. I strongly recommend this very helpful and worthwhile book to any CEO who needs to build alignment and an actionable strategy that mobilizes people across the company. Read Strategy-In-Action. Then build and execute the future you want.Steven Esses, CEO, ArotechThomas and Ed's excellent book provides 21st-century thinking and a holistic approach to the design and execution of the strategic process. Seven simple steps guide you through Strategy-In-Action to yield sustainable success. Love how it 'marries' the importance of design, implementation, and PEOPLE as critical to making it all happen. Lisa Grattan, Member, Board of Directors, Women's Tennis Association (WTA) As a business professor, I am drawn to books like Strategy-In-Action: Marrying Planning, People and Performance by Thomas D. Zweifel and Ed Borey. Strategy-In-Action would make a great supplement to or even a textbook for a graduate-level business course on Strategic Management. I like the debunking of the linear fallacy where people believe that strategy can be broken down into tasks to be performed. As Zweifel and Borey make clear, it doesn't always work that way. I appreciated the chapter on "The Art of Measurement," What's on the Dashboard?" and the case studies and graphics included to help grasp this complex topic. The Strategy-In-Action Worksheet at the end of the book was a nice way to sum up the process in a takeaway that readers can use.Lori A. I wanted to ask for a refund for this book but I figured If I did I would not have the opportunity to give it a bad review. So I am essentially paying 5 euros (kindle price) for the opportunity to give this review. The book is chock full of elevator pitch stories about companies who "made it" while giving the shallowest details of how. The thesis of the book is the classic "7 things you have to do" but they are extremely disappointing. Here they are:1: Shared understanding 2: Strategic intent 3: Dashboard of key indicators 4: Thrust (!!!) 5: Leadership (Really!) 6: Catalytic actions (Wasn't that Thrust?) 7. Sustain the momentum. Here is the summary of step 5 from the book: "Step Five: Leadership . Leaders can be at all levels of the organization. There are four types: those who lead the strategic process itself, typically Board members and C-level executives; implementers; other affected stakeholders; and gatekeepers who might throw a wrench into the process unless they are aligned. They are capable of leading by example; unyielding about the goal but flexible about the means; highly curious and tolerant of uncertainty; and respectful of divergent viewpoints". I am sorry but there is so little information in that extract and so much fluff... that I can't even trust what information there was. So... why are so many people giving this book a solid 5 stars with very little rationale? Why indeed.
The best book about strategy I ever read. It closes the gap between powerful visions and people actions through a framework that I never experienced before. Each of the 7 steps of Strategy-In-Action is provided through a powerful context build upon real business case, step by step exercise or workshops to enable you to start with your own team from day 1. It also covers all pitfalls that are waiting for you along the way, with easy and understandable solutions to override them.A must have in my bookshelf!
Great book! Clear, results-driven, and all about listening and getting out of people's way. It's about doing things more and managing less, but with clear steps for doing it right. Highly recommended.
The book builds on the respected scholarly books on strategy of the past. Then adds a dynamic methodology to integrate coherent actions for the present that ties to the future.
It is Okay
This handy book by Thomas Zweifel and Ed Borey is a true treasure. Whenever I plan a project, prepare for a workshop, or review our organizational strategy, I open the book and invariable find inspiration to challenge my assumptions, ask deeper questions, and find myself more prepared for finding better options. This book is fresh, results oriented, rich in examples. It has been an invaluable resource on my desk since the day I got it - just with ever more ear-marks, and the progressive wear and tear of a book in constant use.
Not compelling at all...Collage of quotes and shallow stories with a twist of so called action points... Could not care to finish... Definite waste of money and time...
There are far better books to read that won't make you want to poke your eyeballs out. I had to finish this book for a strategy group. However, myself and the other participants thought the book was a waste. Essentially, the book lists a bunch of case studies and comments on them. However, the case studies are broken up throughout the book, and it's difficult to gain any relevant information. It read as if two people recorded their conversations in which they brag about helping different organizations and then put them into a book w/ little insight as to how it would read. The concept has potential, the layout disappoints.
