This book has virtually nothing to say about Al Swearingen. It culls a lot of stories out of the local newspapers, mostly pertaining to The Gem. You don't get close to the person of Al Swearingen at all.
On reading this I found the real Swearingen a lot more covert in his dealings in Deadwood. A well written but easy read of this shady businessman.
What the reader learns from this book is that the information regarding Al Swearingen is limited at best, and that he was not as interesting as the character in HOB's Deadwood.
When I first flipped through this book (purchased at a gift-store, not on Amazon.) I was on the fence—mostly because at 142 pages, I wasn't sure it would be enough quanity to hold me over. Thankfully, the book DELIVERED. It didn't seem like a single page was wasted. The main reason I picked it up because the bibliography section referenced books I had not read, and the notes section referenced a TON of old newspaper articles, (many of which were evidently unearthed for this book.)The book itself is quite well-written. It isn't stuffy like a history/academic book, and not over-sensationalized like many of the "pulpy" history titles that emulated dime-store novels. Most of all, there is NEW material about Al. Even though much of what we know about Swearingen was lost to history (and much of what we think of when we hear his name is from the masterful performance by Ian McShane.) this books offers so many insights that we've never before seen. (Such as the CORRECT way to spell the Swearingen name, as found in documents unearthed by the author.)If you love Deadwood (the HBO show, or the western town), Wild West History, or true crime stories, this is an unassuming and quick read that will inform, entertain, and most importantly, illuminate an infamous character made famous by one of the best character actors of his generation.
I am an Iowa relative of Al Swearingen and have been researching this family for decades. I shared information with the late Jerry Bryant and provided Al’s obituary and location of his grave, among other things, so I can confirm that this is the best depiction of Al’s time at the Gem Theater that has been published. Barbara Fifer, the author, and Will Harmon of Far Country Press have delivered an excellent and accurate account of Al’s time in Deadwood. I’ve read numerous other accounts of Al’s life over the years and most of them are very entertaining – for their creativity and obvious mistakes. This is a well-researched and very readable account of Al’s time at the Gem.
