This was a Xmas gift and I hope the 4 year old likes it. The art work is very creative and the message of “feelings†is well done.
Amazing story! Crying even as I added a few to my shopping cart to buy as gifts!
At first glance this looks like a book for very young kids that’s simply demonstrating all the different ways we see blue (baby blue, ocean blue, etc.) But, it has a secondary, more powerful message as it shows blue as an emotion, and we see the main character’s faithful dog friend become older and die. And the final message is, we’ll eventually be able to move on. Too quickly we see the boy has grown more and meets a girl with a puppy. They become a trio and blue takes on a newer, happier meaning.The author cleverly has small cut-outs, or windows on most pages, and pictures are phenomenal and absorbing. Tears may come when reading this and that’s okay because they can be healing. My one qualm about this is that the jump from sadness to a new chapter in the boy’s life is too quick; there’s no transition. So, adults may need to do some gentle translating. Overall, this is a good book to support adults as they explain the circle of life and death to their young ones.
With its gorgeous illustrations and teasing die-cuts, Laura Vaccaro Seeger’s Caldecott Honor book, GREEN, was one of my favorites to teach during my unit celebrating award winners. I was thrilled when I found out there would be a companion book and it did not disappoint.BLUE not only shares beautiful illustrations highlighting shades of the color blue, it also uses simple descriptive language to tell the love story between a boy and his dog. Stunning and emotionally stirring, this book is a standout!
The art in this book alone is beautiful. I'd hang any of them on my wall. The story is touching. It reminds me of a good (and the only) dog that I had as a kid. How could she break my heart in 32 pages? I'd recommend it to adults even.I agree with the other reviewer that it goes from sad to happy at a startling pace.
My favorite book of the year! It is astonishing the emotion Laura Vaccaro Seeger is able to convey in this wordless picture book. I dare anyone not to cry experiencing Blue. The book is about the different phases of life. Yes, a dog passes on in it, but Blue is so loving and hopeful you don't really concentrate on the sadness. Seeger won a Caldecott honor for Green. I like Blue even more. Hurry up and buy this masterpiece, folks.

From snuggling as baby & pup to creating artwork to camping under the stars, Seeger gently builds the story to its final - heart-wrenching yet hopeful - ending.Kids LOVE this book. We read it as part of our Mock Caldecott unit in elementary library and it was - by far - the most-requested title. Yes, they got weepy...but kids are deep and [SPOILER] many know the pain of losing a pet.Seeger's paint looks as though it lifts off of the page, and the cut-outs on each page add a layer of visual interest and engagement with the audience. Very highly recommended.
